Mrs. Comfort Ukpong, Managing Director of Greater Scholars International Schools, Ajah, Lagos, has called on students to strike a balance between academics and sports, noting that sports play a crucial role in developing life skills. Speaking at the school’s 9th Annual Inter-house Sports competition, Ukpong highlighted the benefits of sports, stating that it helps students build leadership, discipline, communication, and resilience.
“Sports are essential in education because they help children acquire skills that go beyond the classroom,” she said. Ukpong also emphasized that participation in sporting activities teaches students how to win and lose gracefully, a valuable lesson they can carry into real life. “When students lose a competition, they learn the importance of resilience – to pick themselves up and try again,” she added.
She noted that through activities like the inter-house sports competition, students learn teamwork and the importance of supporting each other, even if they’re not directly participating. “At the end of the day, whether their house wins or loses, students celebrate together as a family.”
Ukpong also pointed out the health benefits of regular physical activity, mentioning that many staff and students had lost weight during the march-past rehearsals, which was beneficial for heart health.
Dr. Obinna Awikak, CEO of Eyemasters Group and Chairman of the event, echoed her sentiments, describing sports as a universal language. “Sports teach children that winning isn’t everything. It’s about building team spirit and confidence,” he said. Awikak also highlighted the role of Special Olympics in helping children with intellectual disabilities excel in sports.
The event reinforced the importance of sports in education, as it helps shape students not only academically but also physically and mentally.
