The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed reports of a violent clash between the Black Axe and Vikings Confraternities at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO). Speaking to newsmen in Uyo, the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko MacDon, stated that the police are aware of the incident and that calm has been restored on the university campuses.
“The Commissioner of Police is in discussions with the university’s management to develop strategies to address the situation and ensure adequate security,” MacDon said.
According to reports from a student who wished to remain anonymous, the recent clashes resulted in the deaths of four students. One student was reportedly killed at the main campus on Tuesday afternoon, while three others were shot later that night at the university’s permanent site. These incidents follow previous clashes and shootouts, including during a matriculation ceremony on April 17.
Students are calling for urgent intervention from the state government, with some suggesting the introduction of plain-clothed security personnel to enhance safety on campus. Boniface Bassey, a student from the Faculty of Arts, urged authorities to take immediate steps to prevent further violence.
