UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for making what he called “hollow promises” regarding a ceasefire with Ukraine.
Speaking ahead of a high-level summit in Paris on Thursday, Starmer accused Putin of undermining ongoing peace efforts and refusing to engage in serious dialogue.
“Unlike President Zelensky, Putin has shown he’s not a serious player in these peace talks,” Starmer said firmly.
Ceasefire Talks Undermined by Ongoing Attacks
Starmer specifically criticized Russia for violating the agreed naval ceasefire in the Black Sea, despite active negotiations and participation from all involved parties.
“Putin continues to inflict devastating attacks on the Ukrainian people,” he said. “His promises are hollow.”
The British prime minister pointed out that, while Ukraine participates in good faith, Russia continues to act aggressively.
These actions, he said, highlight a clear lack of sincerity from the Kremlin.
US Leads, Europe Responds
Starmer also praised the United States for leading efforts to facilitate ceasefire discussions.
He acknowledged President Volodymyr Zelensky’s repeated commitment to peace and said European nations must now do their part.
“Europe is stepping up to defend Ukraine’s future,” he stated.
Call for Accountability
As the summit begins, Starmer urged Putin to “play ball” and prove he’s ready to support peace.
“Now Putin needs to show he’s willing to engage constructively,” the British leader said.
He emphasized that continued Russian aggression will only isolate the Kremlin further and deepen international opposition.
Looking Ahead: Paris Summit Key to Progress
The summit in Paris is expected to bring together key Western allies, who will explore ways to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses and revive stalled peace negotiations.
As global attention shifts to these talks, leaders hope to pressure Russia into meaningful cooperation—something many say has been lacking.
