The Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in Effurun, Delta State, has implemented a strict code of conduct, prohibiting indecent dressing and social vices such as prostitution, bullying, and drug use among its students. Dr. Samuel Onoji, the Principal and Chief Executive of PTI, made this announcement during the joint matriculation ceremony for the newly admitted 1,625 students. In his address, Dr. Onoji emphasized the institute’s commitment to maintaining high standards of behavior and academic integrity, which is vital for the students’ personal development and academic success.
Zero-Tolerance Policy on Social Vices
Dr. Onoji highlighted the institute’s zero-tolerance stance on various social vices, stressing that these behaviors would not be tolerated under any circumstances. “As you begin your studies, I want to emphasise that the institute has zero-tolerance for social vices such as examination misconduct, physical and sexual assault; cultism, use of drugs, narcotics, theft, robbery; certificate forgeries, indecent dressing and prostitution; stealing, bullying and harassment, misuse of social media, etc.,” he said. This message sets a clear expectation for students to uphold discipline and respect, aligning with the rules and regulations outlined in the Students’ Handbook.
The focus on fostering an environment free from misconduct is aimed at ensuring that PTI remains a place where students can focus on their academic pursuits without distractions from negative behaviors. Dr. Onoji’s address serves as a reminder that PTI prioritizes the holistic development of its students, preparing them for both professional success and responsible citizenship.
Encouragement for Students to Utilize Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND)
In addition to addressing discipline and conduct, Dr. Onoji took the opportunity to encourage students to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), a federal government initiative designed to alleviate financial burdens for students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The loan scheme, which is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, provides zero-interest loans to students for tuition fees and monthly upkeep.
Dr. Onoji lauded President Tinubu for launching NELFUND, noting that it significantly contributes to making higher education more accessible and affordable. “Through President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Federal Government has demonstrated its commitment to making higher education more accessible and affordable for all Nigerians,” he stated. This initiative is particularly crucial in a country where financial constraints often prevent talented students from pursuing or completing their education.
The application process for NELFUND is straightforward and can be completed online, making it easily accessible for both new and returning students. Dr. Onoji confirmed that PTI had already received its first NELFUND disbursement on February 11, 2025, for successful applicants, ensuring that the financial assistance is readily available to support students in their academic journey.
Diverse Courses for New Students
The 1,625 students who were admitted into PTI represent a diverse group of future professionals, with studies ranging across various fields of engineering, technology, and business. The departments include Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Environmental Science and Management Technology, and Industrial Safety and Environmental Technology, among others. Additionally, students have the opportunity to study fields such as Science Laboratory Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering Technology, Petroleum Engineering and Geoscience, Petroleum Marketing and Business Studies, Petroleum and Natural Gas Processing, Welding Engineering, and Offshore Technology.
This wide range of programs ensures that PTI is equipping students with the technical skills and knowledge required to excel in the oil and gas sector, as well as in other industries crucial to the development of Nigeria’s economy. The institution’s comprehensive curriculum is designed to produce well-rounded graduates who are prepared for the challenges of a competitive job market.
Conclusion: A Step Toward Excellence and Discipline
The Petroleum Training Institute’s efforts to instill discipline, integrity, and respect for rules in its students are commendable, reflecting the institution’s commitment to not only academic excellence but also the moral development of its students. The ban on social vices and the promotion of NELFUND are significant steps in creating a supportive, focused environment where students can thrive academically and personally. As the new students embark on their educational journey, they are being given the tools to succeed not only in their studies but also as responsible members of society.
