The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has clarified that the Visa-on-Arrival (VOA) policy has not been scrapped but upgraded to improve efficiency and security.

Speaking after a closed-door meeting with the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) in Abuja, Tunji-Ojo addressed concerns surrounding the reported cancellation of the policy. The meeting aimed to clarify the government’s position on the VOA initiative and reassure investors and the international community.

Key Changes to the Visa-on-Arrival Process

The Minister explained that the upgraded system introduces stricter security and background checks, requiring pre-arrival clearance from:

  • Interpol
  • Criminal record systems
  • Other security agencies for real-time verification

Despite these additional security measures, travelers will still be able to apply online for short-stay visas, with approvals granted within 24 to 48 hours.

How the New System Works

  • Travelers apply online before their trip.
  • Once approved, visas are sent directly to the applicant’s email.
  • The need for a physical visa sticker upon arrival is eliminated.

According to Tunji-Ojo, this upgrade will:

  • Enhance efficiency and cut bureaucratic delays
  • Strengthen Nigeria’s border security
  • Improve the ease of doing business and attract more foreign investment

“This enhanced system aims to cut out inefficiencies, allowing Nigeria to better automate and control the inflow of travelers,” he said.

Business Community Reacts

The initial reports of VOA cancellation had caused concern among investors and foreign businesses. However, the latest clarification indicates that the government is focused on making the process faster and more secure, rather than abolishing it.

PEBEC Director-General, Princess Zahrah, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing bureaucratic constraints and making Nigeria a more attractive destination for business and tourism.

With this upgrade, Nigeria is aligning its visa system with international best practices, ensuring both security and ease of access for legitimate travelers.
