Civil servants in Ebonyi State are set to receive a significant boost in earnings as the government has raised the minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000.
This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe, during a media briefing after the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting held on Thursday.
According to Omebe, the increase is part of the administration’s effort to prioritize workers’ welfare and economic well-being. He stated that the new wage structure takes effect immediately and applies to all categories of state employees.
“We want to state categorically that this is not a political statement, as this government does not toy with workers’ welfare,” Omebe explained.
He revealed that Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration has already settled pension and gratuity arrears owed to state retirees since Ebonyi’s creation in 1996. He also confirmed that the verification of local government retirees has commenced to facilitate prompt payments.
Omebe dismissed any suggestion of political motives behind the wage review, insisting that the administration’s record of meeting financial obligations proves otherwise.
“The governor is a leader, builder of capacity, human beings, and infrastructure. The government is anchored on the biblical people’s charter of needs mantra which is leading the people according to their needs,” he noted.
Additionally, EXCO has endorsed the implementation of the eight-year tenure policy for directors, which will see affected officials retire after serving the specified duration at the same level.
Frontpagenews.ng reports that Ebonyi State joins a growing list of Nigerian states reviewing workers’ pay packages to cushion the effects of inflation and economic hardship.
