Disgraced Equatorial Guinea Official Baltasar Ebang Engonga Gets Eight-Year Jail Term Over Corruption

Equatorial Guinea’s judiciary has delivered a landmark ruling against corruption, sentencing Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the former financial crimes chief, to eight years in prison for embezzlement. The high-profile case follows an embarrassing scandal involving leaked sex tapes that put the senior government official at the center of international headlines.

Background of the Conviction

The Bioko Provincial Tribunal found Engonga guilty of diverting public funds, specifically travel allowances, which he and five others allegedly shared for personal use. According to Hilario Mitogo, spokesperson for the Supreme Court, the conviction highlights a wider pattern of financial mismanagement among top officials in the Central African oil-rich state.

Public Humiliation and Scandal

Engonga, known locally as “Bello,” was already in the public eye after explicit videos surfaced on social media in late 2024. The scandal intensified when it emerged that some of the recordings were made in his office at the Ministry of Finance. The shocking revelations fueled an online frenzy of mockery, parodies, and satirical cultural expressions, including a fake drug jokingly called “Balthazariem.”

The Sentence and Fine

The tribunal sentenced Engonga to eight years behind bars in addition to a fine totaling $220,000. Analysts say the ruling represents both punishment for financial misconduct and a symbolic attempt to restore public trust in government institutions.

Frontpagenews.ng reports that this case has reopened discussions about systemic corruption and the lack of checks and balances in Equatorial Guinea, where political elites often control vast wealth despite widespread poverty among citizens.
