Destalker Shares How Failed Internet Fraud Led to Comedy

Popular Nigerian comedian Destalker has opened up about how his path to fame began in an unexpected way — after an unsuccessful attempt at internet fraud.

Speaking on the In-house Gist podcast, the award-winning comedian shared that his early struggles in Enugu pushed him to experiment with online scams before eventually finding his true calling in comedy.

According to Destalker, a close friend introduced him to cyber fraud, but he quickly realized that the lifestyle wasn’t meant for him due to his kindhearted nature.

“Before I left Enugu, I tried internet fraud with one of my friends who is now a pastor, Rev. Nelson Umeh. We would book night sessions at cyber cafés for ₦250. I couldn’t afford it, so he always paid,” Destalker recalled.

“While he was scouting for victims online, I’d be chatting with family and friends on Facebook until I fell asleep. There’s no point overspending when you’re on the wrong lane.”

The comedian explained that the experience taught him valuable lessons about purpose, self-belief, and perseverance. He said his failure in internet fraud was a turning point that helped him stay true to himself and build the confidence that later fueled his comedy career.

Despite facing rejection and opposition from some industry peers, Destalker said he refused to give up on his dreams.

“Some comedians told me I wouldn’t perform at certain shows. I told them I’d still blow even without performing there — and I did,” he added. “Some of those shows no longer exist, and some of those comedians are no longer relevant.”

Destalker’s story is a powerful reminder that setbacks can often lead to greater success when one stays focused on their true path.
