Delta State Chief Judge Frees Inmate During Quarterly Visit to Warri Correctional Centre

Delta State Chief Judge, Justice Tessy Diai, granted freedom to an inmate, Mr. Napue Chitu, during her quarterly visit to the Warri Correctional Centre. The release followed a review of 379 warrants, with the decision based on recommendations from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

During her visit on Thursday, Justice Diai noted, “A total of 379 warrants were reviewed, and the release of the inmate was based on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions.” She further explained that the following day, her team visited the Sapele Correctional Centre and reviewed warrants, including those of minors at the Sapele Remand Home, although no additional inmates were granted bail as their cases remain ongoing in court.

Justice Diai expressed gratitude to the Assistant Controller of Prisons at the Warri Correctional Centre, the DPP’s office, and others involved in facilitating the successful review process. She announced that the exercise would continue on Monday, November 11, 2024, with planned visits to other correctional facilities across Delta State.

The Controller of Prisons at the Warri Correctional Centre praised Justice Diai’s commitment to these quarterly visits, acknowledging that they significantly aid in reducing overcrowding within the facility.
