Dangote Group has signed a $400 million construction equipment agreement with China’s XCMG Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. in a major move to fast-track the expansion of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals.
The deal is expected to significantly speed up plans to scale the refinery’s capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day, a leap that would position it as the largest single-train refinery in the world.
Under the agreement, Dangote Group will acquire a wide range of advanced construction equipment to support ongoing and future projects across refining, petrochemicals, agriculture, and large-scale infrastructure development. The new machinery will complement existing assets already deployed at the refinery site, with the expansion programme projected to be completed within three years.
Beyond crude refining, the expansion will drive major increases across the Group’s petrochemical and fertiliser operations. Polypropylene production capacity is set to rise from 900,000 metric tonnes per annum to 2.4 million metric tonnes per annum, while urea production in Nigeria will triple from 3 million to 9 million metric tonnes per annum. This is in addition to the Group’s existing 3 million metric tonnes per annum capacity in Ethiopia, reinforcing Dangote’s position as the world’s largest urea producer.
The expansion plan also includes increasing Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) production to 400,000 metric tonnes per annum, strengthening supply to Africa’s detergent and cleaning products industry and cementing the Group’s leadership on the continent. Additional base oil production capacity is also part of the broader investment drive.
In a statement, Dangote Group described the agreement as a strategic investment aimed at deepening its construction capabilities and accelerating its long-term ambition to build a $100 billion enterprise by 2030.
“The additional equipment we are acquiring under this partnership will significantly enhance execution across our projects. With this investment, we are positioning ourselves to become the number one construction company in the world,” the Group said.
The deal underscores Dangote Group’s aggressive expansion push as it scales operations, strengthens regional market presence, and advances toward its long-term growth vision.
