The Cross River State chapter of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria (MAN) has commenced an indefinite strike, effective Wednesday, November 27, 2024, following the state government’s failure to address their demands. The strike aligns with a broader warning strike by organized labor in the state.
In a bulletin jointly signed by MAN Chairman, Godwin Onah, and Secretary General, Solomon Abuo, the magistrates expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s lack of action on issues ranging from the implementation of promotions to overall welfare and improvement of working conditions.
The bulletin stated:
“Sequel to our communique issued on November 5, 2024, arising from the general meeting wherein eight demands were made from the Government of Cross River State, and following our letter to the Governor dated November 11, 2024, wherein a strike notice was extended to Friday, November 22, 2024, to enable the government to address our demands, we regret to note that no action has been taken to date.â€
The association emphasized that the strike would continue until the state government fully meets their demands. Magistrates across Cross River State have been instructed to ensure full compliance by their staff.
Key grievances include delayed implementation of promotions, poor welfare, and inadequate working environments for magistrates. The association warned that this industrial action, beginning with a three-day warning strike, would escalate into an indefinite one unless their concerns are addressed promptly.
“Solidarity forever,” the bulletin concluded, underscoring the resolve of magistrates to persist in their action until their issues are resolved.
