In a grand ceremony held at the State Governor’s Office in Calabar, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, governor of Cross River State, presented Miracle Usani, defender of the Super Falcons, with a sweeping recognition package: ₦50 million in cash, a plot of land in Calabar, VVIP status, and an official appointment as Sports Ambassador of the state.
A Hero’s Welcome
Governor Otu described the gesture as a tribute to Usani’s breakthrough performances at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where Nigeria clinched the continental crown.
He praised her as a “symbol of pride” not just for Cross River, but for the nation and all of Africa.
Addressing Usani directly, he remarked: “You have shown that what a man can do, a woman can also do — and sometimes even better. We are proud of your excellence and resilience.”
Reflecting on the state’s plans, Otu noted that sports should no longer be viewed merely as recreation, but as a growth sector for youth development and economic empowerment.
From Humble Beginnings to Continental Spotlight
In her heartfelt response, Usani recounted the adversities she faced on her path to stardom: “In my hometown, there was no female team. I often played with boys. People doubted me — said girls who play football become masculine. But I held on.”
Born on June 20, 2007, the Cross River native currently plies her trade with Edo Queens F.C. and has earned her place in national colors, featuring for Nigeria at age-group levels and the senior team.
Her rise is a testament to determination transcending structural constraints.
Usani dedicated the gift to her supporters, family, and faith, pledging to continue flying the Green‑White‑Green high.
What the Package Means
Governor Otu has extended to Usani the title *l“VVIP of Cross River State”, entitling her to state privileges at official events.
As Sports Ambassador, she will be part of the state’s protocol for major events and serve as a public face for sporting initiatives.

The governor expressed hopes that her story will catalyze investment in grassroots talent and inspire other youths across Cross River to chase their dreams.
Spotlight on Women’s Sport & State Incentives
This is not the first time a governor has lavished praise (and reward) on female footballers after national triumphs. In August 2025, Imo State’s Governor Hope Uzodimma gifted ₦30 million and land to each of the Imo-born Super Falcons players.
These gestures reflect a growing recognition of the role of women in elevating national prestige through sports.
Yet, while the praise and reward are notable, analysts point out the need for sustained structural support — league funding, facilities, coaching, and consistent state backing — if the moment is to evolve into lasting legacy.
The Road Ahead
For Governor Otu, the move signals an ambition: to revitalize Cross River’s sports infrastructure and inspire a pipeline of “many more Miracles.” For Usani, the road is just beginning — but now with even greater responsibility, visibility, and promise.
Her story — from a barefoot girl in Ugep playing with boys, to national heroine and state ambassador — is the kind of narrative that stirs hearts, challenges stereotypes, and urges communities to dream bigger.
