Violence against women in Nigeria continues to surge. The Lagos State Police Command recently arrested Mr. Peter Dike. He is accused of killing his wife in their home at Oke-Ira Ilogbo Eremi Community, Marogbo. The arrest followed a brutal incident on Wednesday.
Details of the Incident
Dike allegedly stabbed his wife during a heated argument. The argument escalated, and violence ensued. The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the details. He stated that detectives from the Morogbo Division quickly responded. They arrested the suspect after retrieving a blood-stained kitchen knife.
The Police Response
Hundeyin explained that the police were alerted during a township patrol. They moved swiftly to the scene and detained Dike. He confessed to the crime after being interrogated. The body was sent to the General Hospital in Badagry. The case was handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further action.
Escalating Domestic Violence Cases
This murder is part of a troubling trend. In October 2024, Motunrayo Olaniyi killed his wife, Olajumoke, in a violent altercation. The incident took place in the Ikorodu area at Amazing Grace Estate. Sadly, many other similar cases continue to surface.
Rising Femicide in Nigeria
FRONTPAGE Metro reported disturbing figures from 2024. According to the DOHS Cares Foundation, 133 Nigerian women fell victim to gender-based violence in 2024. The foundation’s tracker monitors cases of femicide across the country.
The Role of the DOHS Cares Foundation
The DOHS Cares Foundation works to combat gender-based violence in Nigeria. It collects and documents femicide cases to raise awareness. This data is critical in pushing for change in laws and societal attitudes towards women.
