Osun Police Arrest Suspected Cultist for Shooting Grocery Seller Over Unpaid Debt

The Osun State Police Command has arrested a suspected cultist, Segun Ogunfunmilayo, for allegedly shooting a grocery seller in Ede, Osun State, over an unpaid debt.

The incident occurred on March 8, 2025, around 9:00 pm in the Bihari/Ishola area of Ede. According to the police, Ogunfunmilayo bought an energy drink from the victim and promised to pay via bank transfer. However, after the seller failed to receive the payment alert, he approached Ogunfunmilayo to request his money, a move that allegedly angered the suspect.

How the Attack Unfolded

According to a statement released by Adeola Adeoye, the acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Osun State Command, Ogunfunmilayo not only bought an energy drink but also collected ₦400 in cash from the seller, promising to transfer a total of ₦900 to him.

“When the complainant did not receive the credit alert, he went to inform the suspect,” the police statement read. “To his surprise, the suspect brought out a cut-to-size pistol from his bag and shot him in his left hand and right arm before fleeing the scene.”

Suspect Apprehended After Police Manhunt

Following the shooting, the police launched an immediate investigation in collaboration with Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) operatives. Ogunfunmilayo was tracked to his hideout, where he was arrested.

Upon his arrest, he was found in possession of a cut-to-size pistol and a live cartridge, which were recovered as exhibits. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being a member of the Alora secret cult group, confirming suspicions of cult-related violence in the region.

“The suspect will be charged to court once the investigation is completed,” Adeoye confirmed.

Cultism and Rising Violence in Osun State

The arrest of Ogunfunmilayo is the latest in a series of cult-related crimes in Osun State, raising concerns about the resurgence of cult violence in urban and semi-urban areas. Secret cult groups have been responsible for several violent attacks, armed robberies, and gang clashes, often leading to fatalities and public unrest.

Law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to curb cult activities, making numerous arrests in recent months. However, the persistence of these groups underscores the need for stronger security measures, community policing, and public awareness campaigns to discourage youth involvement in cultism.

Implications and Next Steps

The Osun State Police Command has assured the public that it remains committed to eradicating cultism and ensuring the safety of residents. Meanwhile, the victim is receiving medical treatment, and the suspect is expected to face legal proceedings soon.

As authorities work to strengthen security, residents are urged to report suspicious activities and avoid involvement in cult groups, which often lead to violence, crime, and legal consequences.
