The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Council, Lagos State Chapter, has expressed profound outrage over the alleged murder of Adedamola Ogunbode, a recent graduate of Lagos State University (LASU). The association has called for swift justice and the implementation of measures to ensure the safety of students and graduates.

Incident Overview

Adedamola Ogunbode, a 28-year-old graduate of Political Science Education from LASU, was reported missing on January 16, 2025. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of a prophet in the Ojo area of Lagos State, with allegations suggesting that Ogunbode was murdered for ritual purposes. Reports indicate that his mutilated body was discovered buried within the premises of a church associated with the suspect.

NANS’ Position

In a statement jointly signed by the State Chairman, Abdul-Raheem Abdul-Quadri, and the Public Relations Officer, Ridwan Ajayi, NANS described the incident as a direct assault on the Nigerian student community. They emphasized that such occurrences highlight the increasing insecurity faced by young Nigerians striving for a better future.

Demands for Justice

NANS has called for an expedited, transparent, and decisive legal process to ensure that those responsible for Ogunbode’s death are held accountable. The association warned against any attempts at political interference or compromise, stating their readiness to resist such moves.

Appeal for Enhanced Security

Highlighting the broader implications of the incident, NANS urged the Lagos State Government to recognize the escalating threats to students and graduates. They advocated for the implementation of special security measures around tertiary institutions and student communities to safeguard lives and property.

Call for Oversight of Religious Organizations

While acknowledging the fundamental right to religious freedom, NANS stressed that this should not serve as a cover for criminal activities. They called on the state government and law enforcement agencies to conduct comprehensive audits of religious centers operating within student environments to identify and eliminate criminal elements masquerading under religious pretenses.

Demand for Inclusion in Investigative Process

Expressing a commitment to ensuring justice, NANS demanded official inclusion in the investigative process. They asserted that they would not remain passive observers while justice is being determined for one of their own. The association cautioned that failure to take urgent action could lead to mass mobilization of students across Lagos State in protest.

Solidarity and Condolences

NANS extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Ogunbode. They also expressed solidarity with the LASU student body during this period of grief.

LASU’s Reaction

The management of Lagos State University has also reacted to the tragic incident. In a statement issued by the Deputy Registrar/Coordinator, Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi, the institution condemned the killing and called for timely justice. The statement confirmed that Ogunbode was supposed to be part of the 28th Convocation Ceremony of the institution set for April 3–10, 2025.

Ongoing Investigation

The Lagos State Police Command has maintained that Ogunbode’s case remains under investigation. The command’s spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that three suspects, including a prophet, had been arrested in connection with the case.

Conclusion

The alleged murder of Adedamola Ogunbode has sparked widespread condemnation and highlighted concerns about the safety of students and young graduates in Nigeria. The calls from NANS and LASU for justice and enhanced security measures underscore the urgency of addressing these challenges to protect the nation’s future leaders.
