Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, strongly supports President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. The minister made his comments in a statement issued on Tuesday through the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations. Matawalle emphasized that the emergency declaration is critical to restoring stability to the state’s turbulent political environment.
State of Emergency to Address Political Crisis
Matawalle called the state of emergency a necessary move to address the political crisis in Rivers State. He stated that the ongoing crisis has hindered the delivery of democratic governance. This crisis has also impacted the welfare of the people in the state. He argued that without this intervention, the political situation would continue to prevent the government from effectively serving the people.
Reflecting on the President’s address about the emergency rule, Matawalle noted the gravity of the situation. He acknowledged the urgent need for federal intervention to address the state’s political issues.
Unconstitutional Actions Contributing to the Crisis
Matawalle criticized the state governor for demolishing the House of Assembly. This action has left Rivers State without a functioning legislature for over 14 months. He pointed out, “This action has contributed to the ongoing political impasse.” Without a functioning legislature, the government struggles to serve its citizens effectively.
The minister also referenced a recent Supreme Court ruling. The court affirmed that a functioning legislature is constitutionally necessary. It condemned the governor’s actions, calling them unconstitutional. Matawalle stressed that such unconstitutional acts must be addressed immediately to restore order.
Security Concerns and Federal Commitment to Peace
Matawalle also expressed concern over increasing reports of vandalism and militant threats. He highlighted the need for a unified effort to restore peace and security. The minister assured the public that the federal government remains committed to ensuring citizen safety. He also emphasized the importance of protecting vital infrastructure in Rivers State.
The Nigerian military is on high alert to secure government infrastructure. The military will respond decisively to any attacks or disruptions to public order.
Call for Stakeholder Cooperation and Peaceful Governance
Matawalle urged all stakeholders to embrace the opportunity for renewed governance. He expressed hope that the state of emergency would lead to a peaceful and democratic Rivers State. Matawalle stressed that cooperation is key to building a state that benefits all residents. Through collective effort, the state can achieve stability, safety, and democratic governance.
