Twelve inmates escaped from the Federal Correctional Center in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, during the early hours of Monday.

The Kogi State Government confirmed the jailbreak through a public statement released by Kingsley Femi Fanwo, Commissioner for Information and Communication.

According to Fanwo, the escape occurred under suspicious conditions. The government has since launched an immediate investigation into the matter.

He described the incident as “unfortunate,” while applauding security operatives for their quick response in containing the situation.

Suspicious escape route raises questions

Interestingly, the escape reportedly occurred through the prison tower, yet there was no sign of structural damage anywhere.

This detail raised concerns for the government. Fanwo said it suggested possible internal sabotage within the correctional facility.

He stated, “The theory that inmates escaped through the tower without any damage raises serious concerns.”

Therefore, the state government ordered a full investigation. Authorities will determine how the inmates fled and who might have aided them.

In response to the breach, Governor Ahmed Ododo directed the State Security Adviser to take immediate action.

Additionally, the governor instructed all security agencies to review current protocols and fix any existing weaknesses.
