IMN Members, Soldiers Exchange Gunfire at Banex Plaza in Abuja

Tension erupted in Abuja on Thursday afternoon as members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) clashed with soldiers at the busy Banex Plaza area. The confrontation reportedly led to an exchange of gunfire, sparking panic among residents and traders in the vicinity.

Incident Follows Security Advisory from U.S. Embassy

The violent clash occurred just hours after the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria issued a security advisory warning its citizens about planned IMN demonstrations scheduled to take place on Friday, March 28, 2025, in Abuja and other major Nigerian cities.

The U.S. Embassy had cautioned that such protests could cause major disruptions, including roadblocks, traffic congestion, and potential violence. The advisory urged American citizens to avoid protest routes, remain vigilant, and monitor local news for updates.

Protest Warnings Raise Tensions Nationwide

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria, commonly referred to as the Shi’ite group, has frequently staged protests across major cities, often demanding the release of their detained leaders or protesting against perceived government injustice. In previous demonstrations, clashes between group members and security forces have led to injuries, arrests, and fatalities.

The embassy’s advisory referenced this history, warning that future demonstrations could escalate quickly and involve confrontations with security forces.

Police Yet to Respond to Incident

At the time of filing this report, details surrounding the Banex Plaza clash remained unclear. Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing security operatives block sections of the plaza while dispersing crowds.

Attempts to reach the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, were unsuccessful. Phone calls and messages went unanswered, and no official statement had been released as of Thursday evening.

Abuja on High Alert Ahead of Friday Protests

Security has since been tightened in parts of Abuja in anticipation of Friday’s planned protest. Police and military patrols have been increased across strategic areas, especially in the central business district, known for heavy traffic and political activity.

Authorities are likely to issue more guidance as the situation unfolds. For now, residents and businesses in affected areas are being advised to remain cautious, avoid large gatherings, and stay informed through official security channels.
