EFCC Arrests Popular TikTok Influencer Murja Kunya for Naira Abuse

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kano State Zonal Directorate, has arrested popular TikTok influencer, Murja Kunya, for allegedly abusing the Nigerian currency. The EFCC operatives took her into custody on Sunday, March 16, 2025, after weeks of intensive investigation and surveillance.

The commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Monday. According to the statement, Kunya allegedly sprayed Naira notes for fun while staying at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano.

EFCC Explains the Charges

The EFCC revealed that this is not the first time Kunya has been under investigation. The agency initially arrested her in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which strictly prohibits the abuse and mutilation of the Naira.

After the initial arrest, the commission granted her administrative bail while awaiting her court arraignment at the Federal High Court in Kano. However, instead of appearing in court, Kunya absconded, making it necessary for the EFCC to launch a pursuit to track her down.

A portion of the EFCC statement read:

“She (Kunya) was initially arrested in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which prohibits the abuse and mutilation of the Naira. She was granted an administrative bail by the commission pending her arraignment before the Federal High Court in Kano. However, when it was time for her court appearance, Kunya absconded, evading legal processes.”

Following her failure to appear in court, the EFCC launched an intensive investigation and eventually re-arrested her on Sunday, March 16, 2025.

EFCC Vows to Enforce Currency Protection Laws

The EFCC has since transferred Kunya to the Kano Zonal Directorate, where she remains in custody. The commission stated that she would be arraigned in court soon to face charges related to currency abuse and evading legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, the agency reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of the Nigerian currency. The EFCC also warned the public against spraying, stamping, or mutilating Naira notes during social events, as such actions violate the CBN Act and could lead to prosecution.

With Kunya’s re-arrest, the EFCC continues to emphasize its zero-tolerance stance on financial misconduct and illegal activities that undermine the value of the Naira. The commission assured Nigerians that anyone found engaging in currency abuse will be held accountable under the law.
