Residents of Nawfia in the Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State were thrown into panic on Sunday after armed men launched a deadly assault near the Afor Market Junction, leaving several people dead and others injured.
According to reports, the attackers stormed the busy area without warning and began shooting at residents and passersby.
Those caught in the surprise onslaught either sustained fatal injuries or fled the scene in fear.
A community member, who spoke to newsmen on the condition of anonymity, described the harrowing moment the shooters arrived.
“The armed men drove in suddenly and started firing at everyone they saw. Many people were hit. We still don’t understand why they targeted this place,” he said.
Another eyewitness recounted the chaos that unfolded: “It was terrifying. They appeared like a trained squad—jumped out, shot randomly, and caused total panic. People were running in every direction. It was like a scene from a movie.”
Authorities have since begun investigating the incident. Although the Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, has yet to issue an official statement, a police officer familiar with the case confirmed that security operatives are already trailing the suspects.
“We are on their trail. This kind of violence is unacceptable, and we are committed to ensuring those responsible are arrested,” the source said.
The President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Daniel Okoye, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy in a statement released on Sunday evening. He condemned the attack and assured residents that security agencies had been alerted.
“I received the news with profound shock,” Okoye stated. “The assault at Afor Market Junction resulted in multiple casualties at the hands of unknown gunmen. This is a heartbreaking attempt to destabilize the peace of our community.”

As investigations continue, tension remains high in the community with many residents still reeling from the sudden outbreak of violence.
