Bukola Saraki Opposes PDP National Convention, Calls for Caretaker Committee Over Legal Crisis

Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has publicly distanced himself from the planned November 15–16 National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) slated to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, citing unresolved legal and political controversies threatening the credibility of the exercise.

Saraki announced his position after hosting members of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) Reconciliation Team, led by Wakili Adamawa and Ambassador Hassan Adamu, at his residence on Tuesday, November 12, 2025.

The meeting, according to him, was aimed at finding practical ways to restore peace and unity within the opposition party.

In a statement shared across his social media pages, the former Kwara State Governor said the PDP must tread carefully given the existence of conflicting court orders surrounding the convention.

He warned that proceeding with the event under such circumstances could render its outcome invalid and deepen the party’s internal divisions.

“Political issues are not best resolved in courtrooms,” Saraki emphasized. “They should be settled through dialogue and consensus among party stakeholders. Legal battles only widen the cracks within the family.”

Saraki expressed disappointment that despite the efforts of well-meaning members to reposition the PDP, entrenched interests continue to frustrate reconciliation.

He advised the leadership of the party to immediately constitute a Caretaker Committee within the next two days to manage its affairs pending the resolution of all disputes.

According to him, the proposed committee would provide stability and restore confidence among aspirants preparing to contest future elections on the PDP platform.

“As things stand,” Saraki said, “no serious politician with genuine electoral ambitions will risk contesting under a party structure whose legitimacy is uncertain. The safest route forward is to set up a caretaker team and defer the convention until all issues are settled.”

The former Senate President maintained that he cannot, in good conscience, lead his followers into a process clouded by legal ambiguity, noting that doing so would endanger their political aspirations.

He concluded that holding the National Convention as currently scheduled would be “a waste of effort” and only escalate the PDP’s ongoing crisis, urging party leaders to instead seek a “win–win solution” through genuine reconciliation and collective dialogue.
