Bayelsa Govt Confirms Death Of Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Declares Three-Day Mourning

The Bayelsa State Government has announced the unexpected death of Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, describing the loss as deeply shocking and profoundly painful.

In a statement released on Friday, Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, revealed that Ewhrudjakpo had been actively engaged in official duties the previous day.

According to the government, he collapsed while heading to a scheduled meeting within the Government House complex. He was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The government confirmed that the incident occurred on Thursday, December 11, 2025, and the late deputy governor was aged 60.

As part of the official response to the tragedy, Governor Douye Diri has declared three days of state mourning beginning Friday, December 12, 2025. All flags across the state are to be flown at half-mast throughout the mourning period.

Governor Diri described Ewhrudjakpo’s passing as “a great loss not only to the government and people of Bayelsa, but to the entire nation,” emphasizing the deputy governor’s dedication and service.

He extended heartfelt condolences to Ewhrudjakpo’s wife, Beatrice, their children, the wider family, the Ofoni Federated Community, former Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, and all citizens of the state.

The governor prayed for strength and comfort for the grieving family and the people of Bayelsa during this difficult time.
