Atiku Abubakar Condemns Adamawa Clashes, Seeks Urgent Action

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has voiced deep alarm over the renewed violent clashes between the Bachama and Tsobo communities in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Atiku described the rising tension, loss of lives, and destruction of property as intolerable, urging authorities at all levels to intervene without delay to prevent further bloodshed.

According to him, the situation has escalated to a point where both the Federal and Adamawa State Governments must “act decisively” to safeguard citizens and restore calm to the troubled communities.

Atiku also reacted to disturbing allegations circulating from the area, which claim that soldiers of the 23rd Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Yola, opened fire on women who were protesting. While the Army has reportedly denied the accusations, Atiku insisted that the conflicting narratives make an independent and transparent investigation unavoidable.

“The horrifying reports coming out of Lamurde are deeply troubling,” he said. “The violence between the Bachama and Tsobo communities must stop immediately. The suffering being inflicted on innocent people cannot be justified under any circumstance.”

He stressed that the alleged shooting of women protesters—if verified—would represent an “unconscionable act” and a grave violation of human rights. He noted that such claims must be thoroughly investigated, with no attempt to shield anyone responsible.

“At a time when the world is united in the fight against gender-based violence, the killing of women or any citizen in cold blood is unacceptable,” he added.

Atiku expressed sympathy to families who have lost loved ones and extended solidarity to the Hama Bachama, His Royal Majesty Dr. Daniel Isma’ila Shaga, and the entire Bachama Kingdom.

He urged both warring groups to step back from further hostilities, emphasizing that peace can only be achieved through dialogue, tolerance, and mutual understanding.

“Violence is not the answer,” he appealed. “The path forward lies in unity and sincere engagement, not in more conflict.”
