The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has confirmed that former presidential candidate and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has been declared wanted by the command.
Speaking during a strategic security meeting held on Monday at the Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja, the Commissioner said Sowore was being sought for allegedly planning to instigate violent demonstrations across Lagos during a recent protest.
According to Jimoh, the Police had earlier invited Sowore for questioning but the activist failed to honour the invitation. As a result, the command has now issued a directive for his immediate arrest.
“Sowore has been declared wanted. We invited him to come and clarify certain issues, but he never showed up,” the Police Commissioner stated. “If you are declared wanted, you should report to the nearest police station, not place phone calls to officers.”
Jimoh further explained that the decision to declare the Sahara Reporters publisher wanted was made under the provisions of Section 215 (1, 4, and 5) of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers the Commissioner of Police to maintain law and order, protect lives, and ensure public safety.
He also disclosed that Sowore’s legal representative had earlier written to the command, expressing his client’s willingness to appear, but that neither Sowore nor his lawyer followed through with the arrangement.
“The order to arrest him still stands. Any officer who sights him anywhere — on the road, in a restaurant, or any public place — should take him into custody and bring him to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for proper investigation,” Jimoh added.
