Anthony Joshua Set for 2026 Comeback, Says Eddie Hearn

British boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed that former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is set to make his highly anticipated return to the ring in early 2026.

This follows recent strategic discussions with Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, signaling a renewed phase in Joshua’s boxing career.

Hearn, speaking after a meeting with Turki Alalshikh, the influential Saudi official behind several recent blockbuster boxing events, revealed that a comeback fight is being lined up for January or February 2026, with preparations already underway.

“We’ve had some very productive talks with His Excellency Turki Alalshikh,” Hearn said. “Anthony Joshua is fully focused and we’re working towards a significant fight early next year.”

Joshua’s Next Opponent Yet to Be Named

While the opponent for Joshua’s 2026 return has yet to be confirmed, Hearn hinted that the fight would be more than just a warm-up — framing it instead as a key stepping stone towards reclaiming heavyweight glory.

“It won’t just be a stay-busy fight,” Hearn noted. “This is about preparing for something big. AJ wants to be tested and deliver a statement performance.”

The comments have reignited speculation over potential matchups with top contenders such as Filip Hrgović, Zhilei Zhang, or even long-rumored bouts with Deontay Wilder or Joseph Parker.

Saudi Arabia at the Center of Global Boxing

Saudi Arabia continues to position itself as a dominant force in global boxing, hosting several high-profile matchups in recent years.

The Gulf nation’s growing role in the sport has been championed by Alalshikh, who has overseen the successful delivery of major bouts involving Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk, and Jake Paul, among others.

Joshua, who last fought in late 2024, is expected to benefit from the Kingdom’s expanding influence — and its capacity to fund blockbuster events with worldwide appeal.

“The infrastructure, the interest, and the ambition are all there in Saudi,” Hearn said. “It’s a natural fit for the next chapter of AJ’s journey.”

Building Toward a Defining Year

Sources close to Joshua’s camp describe the 2026 plan as a “career recalibration”, with the goal of positioning the British-Nigerian boxer for at least two major fights next year — one in the first quarter, and a potential title challenge before year-end.

Having once held the WBA, IBF, and WBO belts, Joshua has spent the last two years rebuilding after losses to Oleksandr Usyk.

Though victories over lesser opponents followed, critics have questioned his readiness for elite competition.

Hearn, however, remains confident.

“He’s mentally and physically in a strong place,” the Matchroom Boxing chief said. “You’ll see that in 2026.”

Is a Title Shot Coming?

As Anthony Joshua prepares to re-enter the ring, fans are eagerly watching for official confirmation of opponents, dates, and venues.

With Saudi Arabia emerging as boxing’s new epicenter, and Eddie Hearn steering the ship, all signs point to a defining year ahead for the former heavyweight king.
