In Abuja, Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, and other Nigerian athletes received national honors from President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Nigerian athletes who competed in the recently finished Commonwealth Games in Birmingham were awarded today, according to a report published by SportsRation on Monday.
National honors and financial incentives were given to the athletes who achieved Nigeria’s best-ever finish at the Commonwealth Games.
Four athletes received the title of Officer of the Order of Niger (OON) for the first time in Nigerian history.
Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, Blessing Oborududu, and Fumilayo Folashade are the athletes in this Category A; all four of them took home gold in the recently finished Commonwealth Games.
They received four million and five hundred thousand naira (N4.5 million) each in addition to the national honors.
President Buhari awarded the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) to seven athletes in Category B who also took home a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Odunayo Adekuoroye, Onywkwere Chioma, Nwachukwu Goodness, Njideka Iyiazi, Ofili Favour, Lawal Afolashade, and Genesis Mercy are the athletes in this group.
For their valor, they were each awarded N4.5 million.
Silver medal winners in Category C received a Federal Republic Medal Class 1 and a monetary gift of 2.5m.
Finally, a Federal Republic Medal Class 2 award of one million five hundred thousand naira (N1.5m) was given to the Category D (bronze medalist).
