Ahmed Musa Retires from Super Eagles After 15-Year Career

Ahmed Musa has officially drawn the curtain on his international football career, ending a remarkable 15-year spell with the Super Eagles that saw him rise into one of Nigeria’s most respected and influential footballers.

The 33-year-old forward announced his decision on Wednesday, December 17, through a statement shared on his verified Instagram account. In an emotional message, Musa reflected on a journey defined by dedication, resilience and unforgettable moments in Nigeria’s green and white colours.

According to Musa, the decision followed deep personal reflection, marking the end of a chapter that began when he was still a teenager breaking into the national setup.

“Representing Nigeria was always an honour,” he stated. “From the first invitation, I understood what it meant to wear the national jersey, and I carried that responsibility with pride throughout my career.”

Musa recalled his early years with the national team, describing a demanding period when he was simultaneously called up to Nigeria’s U-20, U-23 and senior teams. Despite the constant travel and pressure, he said answering the nation’s call was never in question.

“I was young and still learning, but I never hesitated. Whenever Nigeria needed me, I was ready,” he said.

That unwavering commitment eventually earned him a record 111 international appearances, making him the most capped player in the history of Nigerian football — a milestone he described as both humbling and deeply meaningful.

“Playing over a hundred games for my country is something I value immensely. Every appearance carried responsibility, and I always tried to give my best,” Musa added.

His international career was filled with defining achievements, none bigger than Nigeria’s triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. Musa remains proud to have been part of a squad that restored continental glory to the country.

“Winning AFCON in 2013 will always remain special. That team represented unity, belief and true national pride,” he said.

On the global stage, Musa carved his name into World Cup history. He became the first Nigerian player to score twice in a single World Cup match, netting a brace against Argentina at Brazil 2014. He repeated the feat four years later at the 2018 tournament, scoring twice against Iceland and finishing as Nigeria’s highest goalscorer in World Cup history with four goals.

“Those World Cup goals are moments I will forever cherish. Representing Nigeria on football’s biggest stage and scoring for my country was a dream fulfilled,” Musa reflected.

As he steps away from international duty, the former Super Eagles captain expressed gratitude to teammates, coaches, football officials and Nigerian fans worldwide for their unwavering support throughout his career.

“I leave international football with peace in my heart, knowing I gave everything I had. The Super Eagles will continue to soar, and my bond with the team and the country remains unbreakable. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle,” he concluded.
