After Six Months, Tinubu Restores Governor Siminalayi Fubara in Rivers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lifted the emergency rule imposed on Rivers State and ordered the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Frontpagenews reports that the development follows the expiration of the six-month emergency rule, which was declared on March 18, 2025, after heightened political tensions and security challenges in the oil-rich state.

The proclamation had suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly, while Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas was appointed Sole Administrator to oversee the state during the period.

Announcing the end of the emergency rule, the Presidency directed that democratic structures be restored and Governor Fubara return to office immediately.

Meanwhile, political parties and civic groups have reacted differently to the decision. While some stakeholders welcomed the restoration of democratic governance, others are demanding a probe into the administration of the state during the emergency period.

Legal experts are also divided on whether Governor Fubara needs to take a fresh oath of office or continue his tenure without any formalities since he was not impeached but only suspended under the proclamation.

The development has brought renewed attention to Rivers State as residents and observers await how Fubara will resume governance after his reinstatement.
