AFCON Drama: Chelle Breaks Silence on Osimhen–Lookman Confrontation

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has hinted that Victor Osimhen could face internal disciplinary action following a touchline dispute with teammate Ademola Lookman during Nigeria’s dominant 4–0 victory over Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The incident occurred in the second half of Monday night’s Round of 16 clash, despite the Super Eagles already cruising with a three-goal advantage. Television cameras captured a visibly heated exchange between Osimhen and Lookman, as both players appeared frustrated during a breakdown in a promising attacking move.

Osimhen, seemingly angered by what he felt was a delayed pass from Lookman, was seen shouting at the winger before gesturing to the bench to be substituted. Coach Chelle responded by bringing on Paul Onuachu in place of the Napoli striker.

Tensions lingered even after the final whistle. Rather than join his teammates in celebrating the convincing win, Osimhen walked straight down the tunnel, drawing boos from sections of the crowd inside the stadium.

When questioned about the episode during his post-match press conference, Chelle declined to provide details, insisting the matter would be dealt with privately within the squad.

“What happened on the pitch will remain within the group,” the coach said. “I don’t need to explain what will happen next. That is for me to handle.”

The confrontation overshadowed what was otherwise an impressive performance from the Super Eagles. Lookman was instrumental on the night, scoring once and setting up two of Osimhen’s goals, as Nigeria powered into the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Osimhen’s brace took his tally to three goals at the ongoing AFCON, underlining his importance to the team, even as questions now arise over his conduct during the match.

Nigeria will now turn their focus to the quarter-finals, with Chelle hoping to maintain harmony within the squad as the competition intensifies.
