AFCON 2025: John Obi Mikel Slams Super Eagles Squad Choices

Mikel Obi Issues Ultimatum: Entire NFF Board Must Go If Nigeria Misses 2026 World Cup

Former Super Eagles skipper John Obi Mikel has sparked debate over Nigeria’s preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, raising concerns about the squad selection made by head coach Eric Chelle.

Chelle unveiled his final 28-man list for the tournament on Thursday, but the announcement quickly attracted attention due to the absence of several high-profile players. Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, Celtic striker Kelechi Iheanacho, Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare, and Crystal Palace midfielder Christantus Uche were among the notable omissions, prompting questions from fans and pundits alike.

Speaking on his *Obi One Podcast*, Mikel voiced doubts about whether the squad truly reflects the best talent available. The former Chelsea midfielder suggested that Chelle may not be operating with complete independence when it comes to player selection.

“From what I’m hearing, I don’t think the best players are being picked,” Mikel said. “It feels like the coach doesn’t have full control over his choices. There seems to be too much outside influence.”

Nigeria will continue their AFCON preparations with a friendly match against Egypt before turning their attention to Group C, where they are scheduled to face Tanzania in their opening game. Uganda and Tunisia complete the group.

Away from the squad controversy, Super Eagles midfielder Paul Onyeka has shared insight into the mindset that has kept him ready for international duty despite a challenging club season. The Brentford midfielder has struggled for regular starts under new manager Keith Andrews but says his loan spell at Bundesliga side Augsburg helped him develop mental toughness.

According to Onyeka, staying calm and composed has become a crucial part of his routine.

“When you’re under pressure, you have to find a way to relax,” he explained. “I focus on my breathing, especially before games. I do it in my room before heading to the stadium, and sometimes again at halftime, just to stay settled.”

The 27-year-old also reflected on Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign, where he played a key role by scoring decisive goals, including a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Benin that secured a playoff spot. However, the Super Eagles’ eventual defeat to DR Congo ended their World Cup hopes.

“I’ve really tried to add goals to my game,” Onyeka said. “It was something I worked on a lot during my time in Augsburg. It’s painful that we didn’t make the World Cup because we have so much quality, but that disappointment is pushing us. We want to go into AFCON, win it, and bring the trophy back home.”
