Newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, officially resumed duty today following a high-level meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Admiral Abbas’s assumption of office marks the beginning of a new phase in Nigeria’s naval command structure, coming just days after the President announced a sweeping reorganization of the nation’s military leadership.
During the closed-door meeting, President Tinubu charged the new service chiefs to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime defense capacity, enhance operational readiness, and uphold professionalism within the armed forces.
According to presidency sources, the President emphasized the need for “renewed coordination among the services” and directed the new chiefs to “deliver visible results in the ongoing fight against insecurity across all domains.”
Following the meeting, Admiral Abbas proceeded to Naval Headquarters in Abuja, where he was received by senior officers and formally took over the reins of command. He pledged his commitment to building a more agile, disciplined, and technologically advanced Navy capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests.
“The Navy under my watch will focus on operational efficiency, integrity, and collaboration with other security agencies to secure our waters and protect national assets,” Admiral Abbas stated in his inaugural address.
Admiral Abbas, who replaces Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, has served the Nigerian Navy in various command and strategic positions, including operations, training, and logistics.
His appointment is part of President Tinubu’s broader effort to reposition the armed forces for improved performance and national security coordination.
