Health Challenges on Nollywood Film Sets
Nigerian actress Dada Omowunmi has opened up about a near-fatal experience with sepsis during a film project in Oyo State. Her revelation comes shortly after fellow actress Jemima Osunde shared her own health struggles caused by contaminated food consumed on set in Ibadan.

Responding to Osunde’s post on X.com on Friday, Dada recounted the harrowing ordeal.

“My dear… I got sepsis on a project in Oyo, they literally left me in the hotel. Thank God my family and management got a car to take me to a hospital in Ibadan. I got there unconscious. It was sepsis, and I was lucky to be alive,” she wrote.

Production Company’s Controversial Reaction
Dada revealed that despite her critical condition, the production company demanded a full refund for her role in the project. “Funny thing, production asked for full refund. Hmm…” she added.

Support from Jemima Osunde
Osunde, who has faced her own health challenges stemming from contaminated food on a film set, empathized with Dada.

“OMG! Sepsis? Thank God for your life, sis! Thank God!” Osunde replied. She went on to share her similar experience, explaining how she had to cover her medical expenses after contracting Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria that caused her to develop gastroesophageal reflux disease.

“Sameeee! I got myself to Lagos and to the hospital. Paid for my treatment myself. They were sending me messages about a refund. By the time my team sent a response with all the clauses they had breached in the contract, they went quiet. Talking about a refund when you haven’t even asked if I’ve recovered,” Osunde added.

Concerns About Working Conditions on Nollywood Sets
These revelations highlight concerns about the working conditions on some Nollywood film sets, particularly the lack of adequate health and safety measures. Both actresses’ experiences underscore the potential health risks actors face and the absence of support from some production companies during medical emergencies.

The Industry’s Need for Reform
As more Nollywood actors come forward with stories of unsafe working environments, there is growing pressure on production companies to prioritize the welfare of their cast and crew. Proper health protocols, access to medical care, and contractual fairness are increasingly being called for to protect those working in the industry.

Both Omowunmi’s and Osunde’s experiences serve as a wake-up call, shedding light on the urgent need for reforms to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved in Nollywood productions.
