Human rights advocate and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has criticized the widespread jubilation that trailed the appointment and Senate confirmation of General Christopher Musa (rtd) as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence, describing the excitement as premature and unwarranted.
Adeyanju aired his views in a Facebook post on Wednesday, shortly after the retired general concluded a lengthy five-hour screening session at the National Assembly.
President Bola Tinubu had nominated Musa earlier in the week to replace Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who resigned due to health concerns.
Musa, who served as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) until his removal in October, attracted a wave of commendations from Nigerians following his ministerial appointment.
Social media platforms were flooded with expressions of confidence in his military experience and leadership capacity, with many citizens welcoming the move as a step toward addressing the nation’s security challenges.
But Adeyanju pushed back against the rising optimism. The outspoken activist warned that celebrating Musa’s appointment without scrutiny could lead to disappointment, insisting that the retired general’s past performance did not justify such high expectations.
In his strongly worded post, Adeyanju labeled Musa “a failed talkative,” arguing that his tenure as CDS did not yield meaningful results.

“Mark this post. Absolutely nothing will come out of the appointment of General Chris Musa as Minister of Defence,” he wrote. “A talkative who failed as CDS, but I join the prayer warriors praying for him to succeed, since we have turned a simple thing like governance into a prayer venture.”
Adeyanju urged Nigerians to lower their expectations and focus more on demanding accountability rather than offering blind support.
