Tragic Incident in Isua Akoko
The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old man, Sunday Abilewa, for allegedly killing his father, Abu Abilewa, after the latter refused to buy him a motorcycle.
The incident occurred on December 31, 2024, at Eberi Quarters, Isua Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko South East Local Government Area. According to the police, Sunday strangled his father during an argument fueled by his father’s refusal to fulfill his request for a new motorcycle.
Court Arraignment and Allegations
Sunday was arraigned before a magistrate’s court in Akure on Friday but was not allowed to enter a plea due to the court’s lack of jurisdiction over murder cases.
The prosecutor, Inspector Abdulateef Suleiman, recounted the events leading to the tragedy. He explained that Sunday, reportedly under the influence of hard drugs, became violent after his father declined to buy him the motorcycle.
“This led to an argument, and in the process, the defendant grabbed his father’s neck, resulting in the deceased’s death. Efforts by the defendant’s mother to intervene were unsuccessful,” Suleiman said.
Legal Framework and Charges
The prosecutor stated that Sunday’s actions contravened Section 316 of the Criminal Code and are punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. II, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
The prosecutor requested that Sunday be remanded in a custodial center pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Magistrate’s Ruling
Presiding over the case, Magistrate Mrs. F.A. Akinboboye ordered that Sunday be remanded in prison custody while awaiting legal advice from the DPP. The magistrate adjourned the case to February 25, 2025, for mention.
A Community in Shock
The incident has left the Eberi Quarters community in shock, highlighting the devastating consequences of drug abuse and domestic disputes. As the case progresses, it will shed light on the need for preventive measures to address such issues within families and communities.
This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the importance of addressing underlying social and personal challenges to prevent such avoidable loss of life.
