Renowned communication scholar Prof. Abdallah Uba-Adamu of Bayero University, Kano, has condemned the growing misuse of social media by politicians for selfish interests. His remarks came during a two-day seminar organized for social media users from various political parties in Kano State.

The event, a collaboration between the Hafizu Kawu Media Team and the Council of Ulama of Nigeria, Kano State Chapter, sought to address the rising hostility in social media discussions among politicians and promote healthier political engagement ahead of the 2027 general election.

The Harmful Impact of Misused Social Media

Speaking as the guest lecturer, Prof. Uba-Adamu emphasized that social media is a neutral tool, but its misuse by individuals, particularly politicians, has led to harmful outcomes.

Prof. Uba-Adamu stated:

“Social media in itself is not harmful. But it is its users that are mishandling the process. I am happy to see that this summit is organized purposely to reform and promote decency in modern political practices.”

He commended former Federal lawmaker Hafizu Kawu and the Council of Ulama for their proactive efforts, describing the seminar as a critical step toward improving the political landscape in Nigeria.

A Call for Morality and Decency

The Chairman of the Kano Chapter of the Council of Ulama, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, urged social media users to act responsibly and uphold moral values when engaging in online discussions.

He cautioned:

“Whoever believes in the Day of Reckoning must therefore watch his tongue and be careful about what to post or share with the public.”

Legal and Ethical Insights

The seminar also featured presentations by experts from various fields.

  • Barrister Bashir Musaddique highlighted the legal implications of defamation and other breaches frequently committed by politically motivated social media users.
    He warned:

“Those politicians sending you to defame people’s characters are only using you for their selfish ends. You should ask yourselves why their children are not participating in such unwanted behaviors.”

Recommendations for Sustained Progress

The seminar, described as the first of its kind by an individual politician in Kano State, drew participants from political parties such as the All Progressives Congress (APC), New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Participants and speakers alike commended the initiative and called for similar forums to be held on a quarterly or regular basis to maintain momentum in fostering respectful and responsible political discourse.

Conclusion

This seminar serves as a vital step in combating the toxic use of social media in Nigerian politics. By addressing moral, ethical, and legal aspects, initiatives like this can encourage healthier engagement, build trust, and strengthen democratic practices ahead of future elections.
