A 30-year-old man, Suraja Muhammad, tragically lost his life due to suffocation during a fire outbreak at a Vita Foam store located on Ibrahim Taiwo Road in Kano. The incident occurred on Sunday, January 19, 2025, and was confirmed by the Kano State Fire Service in a statement issued on Monday.

Details of the Incident

The fire, which broke out at approximately 6:30 PM, engulfed a popular building known as Gidan Alhaji Muhammadu Mai Katifa, used as a mattress store and housing multiple shops. According to Saminu Abdullahi, the Fire Service spokesman:

“Shortly after receiving the distress call from our staff, SFS Idris Isah Charo, fire crews from various stations across Kano’s metropolitan area were mobilized to the scene. However, the victim had already been conveyed to the hospital for medical attention before the firefighters arrived.”

The firefighters arrived at the scene by 6:34 PM and discovered that the fire had severely impacted the upper floors of the building.

Extent of the Damage

The fire caused significant destruction:

  1. Upper Floor:
    • The mattress store was completely destroyed, along with one shop and one toilet.
  2. First Floor:
    • Three shops and one toilet were damaged.
  3. Ground Floor:
    • Four shops and two toilets were partially affected.
  4. Neighbouring Building:
    • The fire spread to a nearby building but only caused partial damage.

Firefighting Efforts

The Kano State Fire Service deployed five jets to combat the blaze and successfully brought it under control. However, the cause of the fire and the total value of property lost remain under investigation.

Fatality

Unfortunately, Suraja Muhammad succumbed to smoke inhalation. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.
