The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Anambra State Chapter, has denied reports that the individual accused of killing an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officer in Awka is a medical doctor.
In a statement released on Monday by the association’s State Secretary, Dr. Obiaeli Ifeanyi, via X (formerly Twitter), the NMA clarified that the suspect, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, is neither a licensed medical doctor nor a member of the association.
Misrepresentation of Suspect’s Profession
The NMA expressed deep concern over widespread media reports that erroneously described Ikechukwu as a medical doctor. According to the association, such misinformation damages the reputation of the medical profession and could mislead the public.
Dr. Ifeanyi stated:
“The attention of the leadership of NMA Anambra State has been drawn to online and newspaper publications alleging that a medical doctor shot an EFCC officer in Awka. We wish to categorically state that the suspect is not a medical doctor.”
Findings from Preliminary Investigation
The NMA conducted its own inquiry into the matter and provided the following clarifications:
- No Affiliation with Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH):
Ikechukwu is not a staff member of NAUTH, as confirmed by the hospital’s management. - Not a Member of NMA Awka Zone:
The accused has not been identified as a member of the NMA by any registered practitioner in the Awka Zone. - Not a Licensed Medical Doctor:
Although involved in medical supplies, Ikechukwu does not hold any qualifications as a medical or academic doctor.
Incident Details
The tragic incident occurred on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite, Awka. Initial reports suggested that Ikechukwu, allegedly involved in medical supplies, was a staff member at NAUTH. These claims have since been debunked.
NMA’s Call for Retractions
The NMA has demanded an immediate retraction of all publications that referred to Ikechukwu as a medical doctor.
The statement added:
“We urge the media to conduct due diligence before publishing claims. The NMA Anambra State hereby notifies the media and EFCC that the suspect is not a medical doctor.”
Condolences and Reaffirmation
The NMA extended its condolences to the EFCC and the family of the deceased officer, emphasizing that the medical profession remains a noble and law-abiding field. The association reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity and professionalism of its members.
Conclusion
The NMA’s swift clarification highlights the importance of accuracy in reporting sensitive matters. By addressing the misrepresentation, the association seeks to protect the image of the medical profession while supporting justice for the victim.
