In a tragic and complex turn of events, a 22-year-old woman, Iyanu Adedeji, has been accused of stabbing her husband, Funsho Jimoh, also known as Danjuma, to death during a domestic dispute in the Gbonogun area of Abeokuta, Ogun State. Investigations have since revealed that Danjuma was a wanted suspect linked to cultism, murder, and other crimes in the state.
Domestic Dispute Leads to Fatal Incident
The fatal altercation reportedly occurred after Danjuma accused Iyanu of infidelity upon her return from taking their five-year-old daughter to school. According to Iyanu’s account, the argument escalated into violence. Danjuma allegedly threatened her with a knife, which she deflected, resulting in a chest wound that led to his death.
Iyanu explained:
“As soon as I entered the house to pick up my clothes and flee, he locked the door, took a knife, and threatened to kill me. I flung his hand, and the knife marked him on his chest. He began bleeding and told me it was taboo for him to be cut with a knife due to a charm he had done. He started searching for an antidote but couldn’t find it.”
She recounted that she sought help after he collapsed, claiming exhaustion from his alleged history of domestic abuse. Iyanu added that Danjuma had often beaten her, including three days before his death, when he visited her new apartment and barred her from leaving.
Link to Cultism and Murder
Further investigations uncovered Danjuma’s involvement in cultism and his connection to a series of violent crimes, including the murder of Mary Ogunyemi, reportedly committed by a suspected serial killer, Philip Ogunnaike. Ogunnaike, arrested in October 2024, had implicated Danjuma as an accomplice in Mary’s killing and claimed Danjuma initiated him into the Eiye cult group.
Danjuma was also linked to other crimes, including the murder of two women, one of whom was discovered on her father’s farmland in the Mile 6 area of Abeokuta.
Iyanu confirmed her awareness of Danjuma’s cultist activities, stating that she became suspicious during the christening of their second child. She also revealed that Danjuma frequently hid from authorities and moved between her apartment and other locations.
Police Reaction and Investigation
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed Danjuma’s criminal background but maintained that Iyanu’s actions were unjustifiable. A senior police officer stated:
“Though he was a wanted person, the wife has no justification to have killed him. She will be arraigned soon.”
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, noted that while she was unaware of Danjuma’s link to Ogunnaike, the case highlights a broader issue of domestic abuse and crime within the community.
A Troubling Pattern of Abuse and Violence
Iyanu’s account sheds light on a history of alleged domestic violence and psychological trauma. She revealed that Danjuma’s abuse worsened after their second child’s death, prompting her to relocate from his mother’s home to a rented apartment. Despite the separation, Danjuma reportedly continued to visit and assault her.
Legal and Social Implications
While the investigation into Danjuma’s death continues, Iyanu faces legal consequences for her actions. Her case underscores the need for addressing domestic violence and supporting victims in seeking help before situations escalate to fatal outcomes.
As the Ogun State Police prepare to arraign Iyanu, the community remains divided over the tragic circumstances, with some calling for justice for both the victim of domestic abuse and the crimes committed by Danjuma.
