Imo Police Arrest Man for Killing In-Law During Family Dispute, Crack Down on Kidnap Syndicate

The Imo State Police Command has arrested 40-year-old Uchenna Okpara for allegedly killing his in-law, Uchenna Unakalamba, during a heated altercation involving their children. In a separate operation, police apprehended a member of a notorious kidnap syndicate, intensifying efforts to combat criminal activities in the state.

In-Law Stabbing Incident in Ubomiri

The tragic incident occurred on January 16, 2025, in Ubomiri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, an argument between the children of Okpara and Unakalamba escalated, leading to a violent confrontation.

Okoye explained:
“The altercation, which began as a minor dispute between their children, turned fatal when Uchenna Okpara attacked his in-law, Uchenna Unakalamba, with a broken bottle.”

Police responded to a distress call and apprehended Okpara at the scene, recovering the weapon used in the attack. The victim was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead. His body has since been deposited in the morgue.

“The suspect is currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing. He will face prosecution once the investigation is concluded,” Okoye stated.

Arrest of Notorious Kidnap Syndicate Member

In a related development, the Imo State Police Command arrested Ozioma Dike, a suspected member of a notorious kidnap syndicate, during a raid in a forest near Agwa, Oguta Local Government Area.

The operation, conducted by the anti-kidnapping unit on January 16, 2025, was based on credible intelligence. Police engaged the gang in a gunfight, leading to Dike’s arrest while other members fled into the bush.

Recovered items include:

  • A pump-action rifle loaded with seven live rounds of ammunition
  • An iPhone belonging to a victim kidnapped on January 8, 2025, in Ubomiri

During interrogation, Dike confessed to his involvement in multiple kidnappings across the Ubomiri, Ogbaku, and Ohii communities in Mbaitoli Local Government Area.

Ongoing Efforts to Eradicate Crime

The Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring peace and safety in Imo State. He assured residents that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining members of the kidnap syndicate and prosecute those involved in criminal activities.

Okoye urged the public to remain vigilant and provide information that could assist law enforcement in maintaining security.
“The arrested suspect remains in custody and will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations,” he added.

Public Reactions and Call for Justice

The incidents have sparked concern among residents, who have called for swift justice to deter further acts of violence and crime in the region. The Imo State Police Command has vowed to sustain its proactive approach in addressing security challenges, ensuring the safety and well-being of the populace.
