The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a public alert following recent seizures of dangerous substances in Lagos and Kano. The confiscated drugs, which include New Psychoactive Substances (NPS), were found to have alarming street names such as “Suck & Die,” “Rubber Solution,” “Dead Man,” and “Gelato.” These substances highlight a troubling trend of drug abuse among youths in the country.
Recent Seizures and Public Warning
The NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, shared a video of the seized contraband on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, raising awareness of the growing issue. Babafemi emphasized the importance of vigilance by parents, guardians, and community leaders to combat the rise in drug abuse.
In his statement, he warned:
“Narco-trend update: Parents, shine your eyes 👀! Latest seizures by @ndlea_nigeria officers in Lagos and Kano reveal scary names of some substances, including NPS, we should all watch out for in our homes and communities: Suck & Die, Rubber Solution, Dead Man, Gelato.”
Disturbing Street Names and Their Implications
The substances seized have names that hint at their lethal effects and appeal to a younger demographic, making them particularly concerning. Names like “Suck & Die” and “Dead Man” reflect the dangerous consequences of their use, while “Rubber Solution,” often associated with industrial use, has been misused as an inhalant by individuals seeking a temporary high.
The NDLEA has expressed concern over how these substances are being disguised and marketed, often bypassing traditional drug enforcement mechanisms.
Call for Community Action
Babafemi urged all stakeholders to take an active role in identifying and addressing this alarming trend. He called on parents, schools, and local leaders to monitor behaviors and educate young people on the dangers of substance abuse.
The NDLEA also appealed to community members to report suspicious activities related to drug trafficking or abuse, stressing that collective action is vital to curbing the menace.
NDLEA’s Commitment to Combating Drug Abuse
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying enforcement actions against drug traffickers and distributors while working to prevent the proliferation of such hazardous substances. The NDLEA has consistently highlighted the evolving methods used by drug dealers to target vulnerable populations, particularly the youth.
A Growing Concern
The alarming rise of substance abuse among young people underscores the need for a coordinated approach involving law enforcement, public education, and community engagement. As Nigeria grapples with this challenge, the NDLEA’s proactive efforts to seize contraband and raise awareness are critical steps in addressing the crisis.
By shining a spotlight on these dangerous trends, the NDLEA aims to foster greater awareness and action to protect Nigeria’s youth from the devastating consequences of drug abuse.
