A tragic incident unfolded in the Onitsha area of Anambra State as a yet-to-be-identified officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was shot dead, and another critically injured, during an ambush by suspected Internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as “Yahoo boys.” The attack, which occurred on Friday, has left the anti-graft community and the general public reeling.

Details of the Incident

The EFCC operatives, who had traveled from the agency’s zonal headquarters in Enugu, were reportedly on a mission to apprehend a group of suspected cybercriminals when the suspects unexpectedly opened fire on them.

A witness at the scene, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, recounted the events:
“The incident happened this morning (Friday). The suspected Internet fraudsters suddenly opened fire on the EFCC operatives upon noticing their presence. In the process, one officer was shot dead instantly, while another was critically injured and rushed to a nearby hospital.”

The injured officer remains in critical condition, as confirmed by sources as of Friday night. Several bystanders also sustained varying degrees of injuries while fleeing the scene amidst the chaos.

Identity of the Deceased Officer

The officer who lost his life was reportedly an assistant superintendent of the EFCC. He had recently completed a promotional examination, adding a layer of poignancy to the tragedy. However, his identity has not been disclosed, pending official notification of his family.

Police Confirmation and Investigation

Anambra State Police Command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway. He added that a suspect has been taken into custody, and the weapon used in the attack has been recovered.

“Investigation into the sad incident is ongoing. The suspect is in custody, and the firearm has been recovered. Further details will be communicated,” Ikenga stated.

Reactions and Safety Concerns

The ambush has raised concerns about the increasing risks faced by law enforcement officers during operations, particularly in cases involving suspected cybercriminals. The EFCC and other security agencies have frequently highlighted the dangers posed by criminal elements who resort to violence to evade justice.

This attack underscores the need for enhanced security measures during high-risk operations. It also serves as a grim reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.

The EFCC has yet to release an official statement on the incident, but public calls for justice and improved safety protocols for operatives are growing. Meanwhile, residents of Onitsha and surrounding areas have been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities in their efforts to combat cybercrime.
