A 34-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) graduate, Bryant Michael Ogah, reportedly took his own life after consuming a harmful substance, suspected to be a pesticide known as Sniper. The incident occurred in a hotel located in the Television area of Kaduna South, in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Struggles with Mental Health
Bryant, who recently participated in the Passing-out Parade of the NYSC, had reportedly battled mental health challenges for over 12 years. His mother, Mrs. Ogah, explained that despite the family’s efforts to support and encourage him, Bryant succumbed to the burden of his condition.
According to Mrs. Ogah, Bryant’s struggles stemmed from his desire to contribute meaningfully to his family’s welfare, which he felt he could not achieve due to his health challenges.
“It was the mental health issue that affected him. He took poison and killed himself. He was tired of the situation. He could not help himself. He could not help anybody. So he felt there was no need to continue living,” she said.
She added that the family had constantly reassured him that his presence alone brought them joy, even if he could not provide for them financially.
The Tragic Events
On December 23, 2024, Bryant informed his family that he was going to visit a friend in another community within the local government area. His family, unaware of his intentions, allowed him to leave.
Instead of going to his friend’s house, Bryant checked into a hotel in the Television area of Kaduna South. He paid for a room, where he reportedly consumed the harmful substance.
After 24 hours, when Bryant failed to vacate the room or respond to knocks on the door, hotel staff forced their way in and found him unconscious on the floor. Although he was rushed to the hospital, he passed away shortly after admission.
Family’s Heartbreaking Loss
Speaking through tears, Mrs. Ogah shared how Bryant’s mental health struggles caused him shame and embarrassment, leading him to take the drastic step.
“He wanted to turn the family’s story around for good, but he later took his life as a result of the challenges that he was facing,” she said.
She recalled his final moments at home, noting that he seemed composed when he left, after having breakfast and telling the family he needed a change of environment.
Police Confirmation
The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway. Public Relations Officer DSP Mansir Hassan said, “The command is investigating the matter.”
Mental Health Awareness
Bryant’s tragic story highlights the urgent need to address mental health issues in Nigeria. Mental health challenges often go unrecognized or untreated, leaving individuals and families to grapple with the emotional, social, and financial tolls.
Stakeholders, including government agencies, health professionals, and community leaders, must prioritize creating accessible mental health care services and fostering an environment where individuals can seek help without stigma.
A Call for Support
The Ogah family’s loss serves as a painful reminder of the importance of early intervention, family support, and societal awareness in addressing mental health concerns. Bryant’s story underscores the critical need for collective action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
