Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has announced a fresh curfew in the Ilobu and Ifon communities following renewed clashes between the two neighboring towns. This decision comes after reports of violence and gunfire in the affected areas, which have heightened tensions and displaced several residents.
Allegations and Counterclaims
The Ifon Progressive Union accused gunmen from Ilobu of launching attacks in the Apiponroro area, causing panic and displacing residents. Jide Akinyooye, Secretary of the Ifon-Orolu Progressive Union’s Board of Trustees, detailed that gunshots were heard in the Odoje and Golden Gate areas on Tuesday morning, leading many to flee their homes.
Conversely, Chief Goke Ogunsola, Otun Jagun of Ilobu, claimed the attacks originated from Ifon, targeting Ilobu residents near the boundary areas of Ganga and Apiponroro. According to Ogunsola, residents defended themselves during the attacks and called on the government to provide protection.
Government’s Response
To address the escalating situation, Osun State’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, announced a 12-hour curfew from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM daily, effective immediately. The government has deployed a security contingent, including the Army, Police, and Civil Defence, to prevent further violence.
In a statement, the government outlined its commitment to peace and the steps being taken:
- Curfew Implementation: The curfew aims to restrict movement and limit opportunities for further violence in the area.
- Stakeholder Engagement: An expanded committee comprising representatives from the communities, service chiefs, the State Council of Obas, and other relevant bodies will work toward a permanent resolution.
- Legal Consequences: Individuals or groups found inciting or engaging in violence will face prosecution under the law.
