Sanusi Criticizes Tinubu Administration’s Economic Policies at Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Lecture

Court Summons President Tinubu and Others Over Rivers State Emergency Declaration

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has voiced strong criticisms of the economic policies implemented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Speaking at the 21st Memorial Lecture of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja branch in Lagos on Wednesday, Sanusi asserted that the government’s handling of the economy is flawed and lacking transparency.

Themed “Bretton Woods and the African Economies: Can Nigerians Survive Another Structural Adjustment Programme?” the lecture provided a platform for Sanusi to share his views on Nigeria’s economic struggles and governance challenges.

Economic Policies Under Scrutiny

Sanusi criticized the removal of the fuel subsidy and the naira float, both of which have led to increased inflation and widespread economic hardship. While acknowledging the importance of economic reforms, he argued that these measures have been poorly implemented.

“Is everything being done correctly? No. When I’m ready to discuss the economy, I will,” Sanusi stated.

He further revealed that unlike in the past, when he offered economic advice to previous administrations, he would refrain from doing so for Tinubu’s government. “I can provide insights into the challenges we face, how they were predictable and even avoidable. But I won’t. I’ve chosen not to comment on the economy, reforms, or anything that could benefit this government. They are my friends, but if they don’t act like friends, I won’t act like one either,” he added.

Concerns Over Governance and Public Communication

Sanusi also criticized the government’s communication strategies, pointing out the lack of competent individuals to explain its policies effectively. “They don’t even have people with the pedigree to articulate their policies to the public. Let them explain to Nigerians why they are implementing these measures,” he remarked.

The former Central Bank Governor attributed the current economic challenges to decades of poor governance, stating, “What we’re experiencing today is, at least in part, the result of decades of irresponsible management. People warned about the consequences of our actions, but those in power ignored them.”

Reflection on Gani Fawehinmi’s Legacy

In addition to his critique of governance, Sanusi urged Nigerian lawyers to emulate the late Gani Fawehinmi, a renowned human rights activist and legal icon. He praised Fawehinmi’s integrity, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice, lamenting the decline of ethical standards in the legal profession.

Festus Keyamo’s Tribute

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), also spoke at the event, paying tribute to Fawehinmi’s enduring legacy. Represented by Mr. Henry Agbebire, a director in the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, Keyamo described Fawehinmi as a symbol of courage, resilience, and justice.

Keyamo credited Fawehinmi for mentoring him early in his career, stating, “As someone whose human rights activism began under the mentorship of Gani Fawehinmi, I take pride in the continued relevance of issues he championed, including citizens’ rights, accountable governance, and equitable public policy.”

He commended the lecture for addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges and expressed hope that the discussions would generate actionable solutions to foster sustainable development and social justice.

Prominent Guests in Attendance

The event was attended by several distinguished personalities, including:

  • Afam Osigwe (SAN), NBA President
  • Lawal Pedro (SAN), Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice
  • Femi Falana (SAN), human rights lawyer

While discussions centered on economic reform and governance, the lecture also honored Gani Fawehinmi’s impactful legacy in advocating for justice and human rights.

Looking Ahead

Sanusi hinted that he might address the economy more comprehensively in the future but emphasized that the time for such discussions was not now. Meanwhile, the criticisms of the Tinubu administration and the reflections on Fawehinmi’s ideals highlight the importance of ethical governance, transparent policies, and strong leadership in addressing Nigeria’s ongoing challenges.
