A suspected Boko Haram attack on Kayakura village, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, has left dozens of farmers dead and many others missing. The attack, which took place on Sunday evening, has plunged the community into fear and mourning.
Sudden and Violent Invasion
Residents described the attack as sudden and violent. Gunshots erupted around 5 p.m., causing widespread panic among villagers.
“There was no warning. We were seated when gunshots began, and everyone started running for cover,†said Tijanni, a resident.
Another resident, Aisha Mohammad, expressed concerns over missing persons. “We are still searching for many people. My sister has been looking for her son who went to the farm and has not returned,†she lamented.
Official Confirmation and Casualty Figures
The Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, confirmed the incident on Monday. He revealed that initial reports indicate about 40 farmers were killed, while efforts are underway to locate survivors who fled the attack.
Tar stated, “The attack occurred in Dumba, near Baga in Kukawa LGA. While the exact number of casualties is yet to be determined, preliminary reports suggest that 40 farmers lost their lives, and many others are missing.â€
Governor Zulum Condemns the Attack
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a heinous crime against innocent citizens. In a statement, he called on the military to intensify efforts to eliminate the terrorists responsible.
“With deep sorrow, I extend my condolences to the families of the victims. This barbaric act will not go unpunished. I urge the Armed Forces to track and decisively deal with the insurgents operating in these enclaves,†Zulum said.
Recent Military Operations
The attack comes shortly after a successful operation by the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in the same region. The task force recently neutralized 15 insurgents during a clearance mission in Kukawa LGA, showcasing the ongoing military efforts to combat terrorism in the region.
Community in Fear and Mourning
The attack has heightened fears among residents, many of whom rely on farming for their livelihoods. The unpredictability of insurgent violence has left communities feeling unsafe and uncertain about their future.
“We now live in constant fear. Farming is our only means of survival, but going to the farm has become a life-threatening activity,†a local farmer said.
Government’s Assurance and Call to Action
Governor Zulum reassured citizens that the government is committed to restoring peace and protecting lives. “This attack will be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible will face justice. Our government will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of our people,†he said.
He also urged the Armed Forces to reinforce security in the Lake Chad region and neutralize insurgent hideouts in areas like Dumba.
The incident highlights the urgent need for improved security measures to protect vulnerable communities in conflict-prone regions. The search for the missing continues, as residents and security forces grapple with the aftermath of the tragedy.
