Tragedy struck in Sokoto State when an operative of the Community Guard Corps (name withheld) accidentally shot and killed himself shortly after participating in a successful rescue operation. The joint operation, led by the Nigerian Army, resulted in the rescue of 66 kidnap victims from Tidibali forest in the eastern part of the state on Monday.
Details of the Incident
The unfortunate incident occurred as the operatives returned to their base following the operation. According to Col. Ahmed Usman (retd.), the Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor on Security Matters, the guard died due to an accidental discharge from his firearm.
“The incident happened shortly after they had returned to their base from the operation,” Col. Usman explained. “He was with his gun when it mistakenly fired and shot him. He died shortly afterwards.”
Successes in the Rescue Operation
Despite the tragic event, significant achievements were recorded during the ongoing operation aimed at combating banditry in Sokoto State. According to Col. Usman, 66 kidnap victims were rescued, and several bandits were neutralized during the mission.
“This operation is part of the state government’s efforts to rid the state of criminal elements, particularly bandits. So far, we have achieved remarkable successes, and the operation will continue,” Usman noted.
Government’s Commitment to Security
The Sokoto State Government has been actively sponsoring operations to combat banditry and ensure the safety of its citizens. The ongoing campaign against banditry in the state reflects a broader commitment to restoring peace and stability in affected areas.
Continuous Efforts Against Banditry
Col. Usman emphasized that the operations are far from over, as the state remains determined to eliminate all criminal elements threatening the safety of its residents. He acknowledged the sacrifices of security operatives and reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting their efforts.
“This operation is a continuous one because we want to rid the state of criminal elements, particularly bandits,” he said.
Tribute to the Deceased Operative
The accidental death of the Community Guard Corps operative underscores the risks and sacrifices security personnel face in the line of duty. While his loss is deeply felt, his contribution to the rescue mission and the safety of others remains commendable.
As Sokoto State intensifies efforts to combat insecurity, the tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety protocols and the challenges faced by those on the frontlines of security operations.
