A powerful earthquake struck China’s remote Tibet region on Tuesday, killing at least 53 people and causing widespread destruction. The 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Dingri county, located near the border with Nepal, at 9:05 am local time (0105 GMT), and was felt in neighboring areas, including Nepal’s capital Kathmandu and parts of India. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake’s magnitude as 7.1.
The tremor caused severe damage, collapsing buildings and leaving debris scattered across the region. Over 1,000 homes were damaged, and local authorities have been working to assess the full extent of the destruction. Many people in the affected areas are reported to have sustained injuries, with 62 confirmed injured as of Tuesday afternoon.
Search and Rescue Efforts Underway
Rescue operations have been launched, with teams working through rubble to search for survivors. Videos from China’s state broadcaster CCTV showed rescue workers navigating the debris, distributing blankets to locals to help them keep warm in the frigid temperatures. The high-altitude region, where temperatures were reported to be around minus 8°C (17.6°F), is expected to drop further to minus 18°C (0.4°F) in the evening.
In addition to emergency personnel, disaster relief aid, including tents and quilts designed for high-altitude conditions, has been dispatched to the affected areas. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for full-scale rescue efforts, emphasizing minimizing casualties, resettling displaced residents, and ensuring their safety through the winter months.
Impact Across Borders
The earthquake’s tremors also reached Nepal, with parts of the country near Mount Everest experiencing strong shaking. While no fatalities or serious damage have been reported in Nepal, officials confirmed that the tremors were felt strongly in regions such as Namche and Lobuche, which are close to the mountain. In Nepal’s Namche region, government official Jagat Prasad Bhusal reported that the shaking was strong enough to wake residents.
Nepal is prone to frequent seismic activity due to its position along a major geological faultline where the Indian tectonic plate pushes against the Eurasian plate. In 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, causing nearly 9,000 deaths and widespread destruction.
