The Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has announced the dissolution of the executive committee of the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN), previously chaired by Israel Opayemi. The decision, disclosed in a statement by the institute’s Director of Public Relations, Stanley Ogadigo, follows a comprehensive review of PRCAN’s operations.

Reasons for the Dissolution

According to Ogadigo, the move aligns with legal provisions and aims to address critical issues such as tenure elongation, declining performance, and the need to revamp PRCAN. These changes are intended to reposition the association to better align with NIPR’s strategic objectives and strengthen its role within the public relations industry.

“The decision was made after an extensive review of PRCAN’s operations and is part of a broader effort to revitalise and ensure the association fulfills its mandate effectively,” Ogadigo stated.

New Leadership and Revitalisation Mandate

As part of the restructuring, the NIPR appointed Nkechi Ali-Balogun, a Fellow of the institute and Founder/CEO of NECCI Consults, as the Chairman of the Council Committee on Revitalisation of PRCAN. Ali-Balogun’s primary responsibility is to oversee the association’s activities and conduct a free and fair election for a new executive committee no later than April 30, 2025.

The revitalisation committee, inaugurated on Monday, includes notable industry professionals tasked with steering PRCAN’s transformation. The members are:

  • Karibi George
  • Dr Ahmad Sajoh
  • Hajia Lami Tumaka
  • Chido Nwakanma
  • Mr Hassan Abdul
  • Bolaji Okusaga
  • Adetola Odusote
  • Muyiwa Akintunde
  • Dr Sophia Horsfall
  • Mojisola Saka
  • Dr Dare Ogunyombo (serving as Member/Secretary)

Cooperation from the Outgoing Executive

In a letter addressed to the immediate past president of PRCAN, Israel Opayemi, dated December 21, 2024, the NIPR expressed gratitude for his service and requested his support in ensuring a seamless transition. The institute emphasized the importance of cooperation in achieving the revitalisation goals and maintaining the association’s integrity during this period of change.

Objectives of the Revitalisation

The restructuring is expected to bring fresh perspectives to PRCAN, enhancing its ability to deliver on its objectives. By addressing long-standing governance and operational challenges, the revitalisation committee aims to restore trust and credibility within the public relations consultancy sector. This initiative also underscores the NIPR’s commitment to professional standards and strategic alignment across the industry.

Next Steps

With the committee in place, efforts will focus on assessing PRCAN’s current operations, engaging stakeholders, and preparing for the upcoming elections. The NIPR anticipates that these measures will rejuvenate the association and foster a stronger, more unified public relations community in Nigeria.

As the revitalisation progresses, stakeholders are encouraged to collaborate with the committee to ensure the association’s growth and adherence to professional excellence in public relations practice.
