The Delta State Police Command has reaffirmed its ban on the use, sale, and display of fireworks, including pyrotechnics, firecrackers, and items popularly known as “knock-out” and “banger,” as part of its efforts to ensure a safe and peaceful festive season.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, and released in Warri on Thursday. The statement emphasized that the ban remains in full force and warned residents and retailers to comply with the directive.
Ban on Fireworks
According to the statement, the decision to enforce the ban aligns with measures to prevent and reduce crime during the yuletide. Criminal elements often exploit the noise and confusion caused by fireworks to carry out unlawful activities, posing a threat to the safety of residents.
The statement quoted the Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, as saying, “The command will be enforcing strictly, particularly the ban on the use, sale, and display of pyrotechnics, including fireworks and firecrackers known as ‘knock-out’ and ‘banger.’ This decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to prevent and reduce crime as experience shows that criminally minded persons can take advantage of this to unleash terror on law-abiding residents.”
Advice to Parents, Guardians, and Retailers
The police urged parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against the use of fireworks, warning that violations of the ban would result in arrest and prosecution. Retailers were also cautioned to stop the sale and display of fireworks.
“Parents and guardians are advised to caution their children and wards to desist from using these items, and retailers are equally warned to withdraw from the display and sale of these products, as anyone found wanting will be arrested and prosecuted,” the statement added.
Directives to Law Enforcement
The Commissioner of Police has instructed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to ensure strict compliance with the ban in their respective areas of responsibility. Officers have been tasked with addressing violations promptly to maintain law and order during the festive period.
Cooperation from Residents
The command acknowledged the support and cooperation of Delta State residents in upholding the ban on fireworks. Citizens were encouraged to report any use or sale of fireworks to the nearest police station or through the command’s control room numbers: 08036684974, 08114895600, and 08025666914.
Importance of the Ban
Fireworks have often been associated with festive celebrations, particularly during Christmas and New Year. However, their misuse has led to numerous incidents, including fires, injuries, and heightened security risks. The ban seeks to mitigate these dangers and provide a secure environment for residents to celebrate the festive season.
Conclusion
As Delta State prepares for the yuletide, the police command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring public safety. Residents are advised to comply with the ban and support law enforcement efforts to maintain peace and security across the state.
