The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old man, Alfred Bassey, in connection with the death of his seven-year-old son, whose lifeless body was discovered in a soakaway pit at a construction site in the Trans-Nkisi Layout, Onitsha.

Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement issued on Friday, confirmed that operatives attached to the 3-3 Divisional Headquarters arrested Bassey on December 13, 2024, around 9:30 am. The arrest followed investigations into the tragic incident that occurred on December 11, 2024.
According to preliminary investigations, Bassey, a native of Abi in Cross River State, forcibly took custody of the child from his mother and had been living with him in an abandoned, uncompleted building at Trans-Nkisi Layout, Onitsha. The uncompleted building served as their residence.
On the day of the incident, the boy’s lifeless body was discovered in a soakaway pit at the construction site after the father reportedly left him alone and went to an unknown location.
“The body of the child was recovered and taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor,” Ikenga stated.
Police Action
The State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has directed that the case be immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a more detailed investigation.
The commissioner expressed sadness over the tragic incident, admonishing parents to place the well-being of their children above personal disputes with their spouses to prevent emotional trauma or tragic outcomes.
